The Cross is the best known as representation of Christ’s crucifixion. It also symbolizes the death of self to the world. The old rugged Cross is a symbol of our faith. Rugged means coarse and tough, roughed-up and jagged. The cross was never constructed as a place of delicate finery; rather it was an instrument of torture, built to withstand harsh handling.

WHY IS THERE OLD RUGGED CROSS (IS JESUS CALLING)

Jesus called the multitude with the disciples, and said unto to them, if any man would come after me. Let him deny himself, and take the cross, and follow me. This is the road map to everlasting life. But by providing instructions which will lead a man to becoming a Christian and making a Christian a better Christian.

This call was to multitude as well as to the apostle. It is also applicable to us today just as it was in that time. Let us embrace the call because the thought of God is good for mankind. When man sinned and was separated from God.

God was look looking for opportunity to bring man to Himself. Therefore He send His begotten Son come and die for Us

JESUS ACKNOWLEDGE THE OLD RUGGED CROSS

He said if any man would come after me. This shows that Jesus forced His will upon no man. It is strictly up to the individuals as to whether he wishes to avail himself of the opportunities afforded by Christianity or not. The Lord supplies the ways and means for eternal life, but it is up to take advantage of that offer.

Let him deny himself. And Just as one cannot serve two master at a time. Such as Serving God and mammon, one cannot take part in the vain glories of human society by indulgence in the earthly pleasures. One must deny self by following the word of God and by putting the gospel of God, Christianity first and foremost in his life.

HOW DO WE TAKE THE CROSS

He said take up his cross. And to this Luke adds “daily”, “Cross” is spelled with only five letter word but comprises a vast collection of entities which are molded and fabricated into the christian life. These include rejection (by many facets of human society), trials, tribulations, denials, study (the word of God), labour (in the fields spreading the word), example (living the every day so when viewed by fellow man only honour and glory will be brought to the only true and living God), aiding and abetting others who are indeed, and the list goes on and on. In summary living daily New Testament Christian life.

But the Old rugged cross reveals God sovereignty and providence, benevolence, Justice, power, holiness mercy, glory, and victory over sin’s problem. But, it was at the Cross that humanity’s sin problem was dealt with. When Adam and Eve sinned in the Gardens of Eden. And they lost relationship with God. This affected every future sons and daughters of Adam.

REASON FOR THE OLD RUGGED CROSS

In order to solve the problem of sin. And Christ came to earth He went to the Cross of crucifixion. He died and resurrected for our salvation. But Jesus, the saviour, did not die because it was forced upon Him. It was a choice made in love. But Crucifixion by the Cross was the most horrible, painful and degrading. And it was form of capital punishment in the ancient world.

THE MEANING IN THE ROMAN WORLD

In the Roman world, crucifixion was a method of punishment designed to punish foreigners, political insurgents and slaves. It was never used for Roman citizens.

The cross was a symbol of shame, guilt suffering, and rejection. However, through the cross of Christ He shed His Blood for our redemption. But by the law almost all things are made clean with blood, and without blood there is no forgiveness. The Cross personifies the love of God for humanity.

IS THE OLD RUGGED CROSS CENTER OF REDEMPTIVE WORK

Yes, the Cross is at the center of God’s redemptive work. The Cross is a place of restoration of men to God’s original State. But sinners must embrace the cross as their only hope for eternal life.

“They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His  own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgatha” (John 19:17) for mankind.

THE FOCAL POINT OF ETERNAL LIFE

The old rugged Cross remains the focal point of history for eternal life. Man can only be saved by Christ through the Blood shade on the Cross. If you can believe the name that is above every other name.
